Orthodontics involves much more than straightening crooked teeth. Orthodontists are specialists in improving the look, aesthetics and function of the developing face, as well enhancing aesthetics and function of the adult dentition.
Correcting and aligning the jaws and straightening the teeth to the proper position in the face is exceedingly complex.
All orthodontists first graduate from dental school, then complete a 2½ to 3 year residency after dental school to learn about orthodontics (tooth movement), jaw function and alignment, and dentofacial orthopedics (the guidance of facial development).
Orthodontic residents perform clinical training under close and direct supervision of orthodontic faculty. Only dentists who have successfully completed an accredited, advanced specialty program in orthodontics may call themselves Orthodontists. Family dentists are permitted by law to provide orthodontia, but they lack the specialized training and knowledge to provide the orthodontic care you deserve. And, although not all orthodontic treatments are complex, none are “easy.”
Family dentists are trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat health problems of the mouth. Orthodontics is a very minor part of the dental school curriculum. Yet, some family dentists will present the convenience of one stop shopping, and will offer to straighten your teeth with Invisalign®, traditional braces, or even worse: “6 month braces.” Some will even go so far as to show you a certificate from a “weekend class”. Do not be duped. If a certificate is not from an accredited university, it is worthless. Some will tout a lower fee. They are not doing you a favor. They do not have the knowledge or training. A general dentist who does not refer a patient to an orthodontist for orthodontic services clearly can only be after your money, not your best interest. We have known quite a few family dentists who provide orthodontia to their patients, but when it was time for their own families’ braces, they chose an orthodontist!
ONLY Orthodontists can get you the best smile results that you and your child want and deserve.
